We had an excellent "Art Cloth 2 - Stamping" workshop at Red Gallery on Saturday the 22nd. Participants went home with quite a collection of wooden, rubber, and foam stamps to use on future art projects, as well as some fiber art postcards to send to friends!

Hi fellow Co-op members.

Tuesday Night was a big event. From the gallery we had Betty and her husband, Dawn, Dorann, Steve, Harry, Evans, Carol, Eileen, and myself to meet and greet the visitors. Kelly stopped by for a few minutes on her way to work.

Thanks to Dorann we did serve wine and others brought food.

There were 50 to 60 people from the Chamber of Commerce that came through the gallery. Many of them were pleasantly surprised to find the art gallery existed.

Most of the action was over by 7:45 and we closed the gallery for the night.

It was a fun time meeting new people and introducing them to the gallery.

Our focus in this class will be to create original stamps out of a variety of materials. We will use these stamps with fabric paint to make Art Cloth, Fiber Art Postcards, or the beginning of a small wall hanging. Or participants can choose to continue experimenting with stamps. No pressure, no stress, the class is meant to be fun and give you some new ideas and skills to use in your art.

We had a very productive and fun day at Red Gallery creating Art Cloth. There were eleven of us. We experimented with seven different techniques and a variety of materials including fabric paint, moldable foam stamps, shiva paint sticks, fusible web, glue and shaving cream! Everyone completed a classy looking sample book that they can refer to when they want to use these techniques in future art projects.

Participants also found out why they needed to bring shoes with interesting soles!

Description: Use a variety of techniques and products to produce art cloth samples that can be used in collage or wearable art. This class will allow you the opportunity to try a variety of products without having to invest in them. You will leave with samples that you can use in your art and a good idea of the kinds of products and techniques you would like to explore further. The Artist Cooperative at Red is stunning!

More than 21 artists have their original works displayed in such a wide variety of media you have to go through more than once to see it all.

Artists are beginning to change out their works for our December Christmas Shopping Show.

The artists will be displaying a plethora of very reasonably priced, small to mid size original art pieces just in time for Christmas. You can choose from hand crafted jewelry, fused glass pieces, drawings, paintings, sculptures, mixed media works and more.

Another phase of the sidewalk project has been completed. Red now has diagonal parking out front. When the Preschool/Toddler Art Studio artists arrived this morning, the mommies were greeted with an easy to get to entrance without any dangerous obstacles.
The artist co-op is preparing to change out the artwork on the walls in preparation of the November 7th, First Friday Event. With just two weeks to go, plans are beginning to be put into action. Don't forget to come join Red on Friday, November 7th to see what the Co-op Artists have developed.

NEW SIDEWALKS!!!

It has finally happened. The sidewalks are complete! Besides the new sidewalks, there is new art on our sidewalk. The pictures do not do the pieces justice, so please come down to Red and see the pieces up close.

Sunflowers

For the past two weeks the students have been learning about Vincent Van Gough's Sunflower picture. Last week they were given actual flowers to examine so they would know exactly how a flower looked. Then they drew pictures of flowers. Next, they began mosaics of flowers using various paper and magazine items for their color. This week they finished the mosaics by adding paint to create texture. The only rule was no one could use a paint brush, they all had to use their fingers.

Starry Night

The students worked hard on their starry night projects. They learned that Vincent Van Gough did not use a pallet to mix his colors, he mixed them on his canvas as he painted. Each student was given paper, brushes, and four colors of paint: black, blue, yellow, and white. They were instructed to paint their interpretation of a night sky showing movement and texture.

Mad Science at Red Gallery

Things that make you go hhhm

Well, it is Monday morning, not really a busy day by any standard, but today seems to be much slower than normal. The usual passers-by are missing, so Red has decided to investigate. Maybe the pictures Red took will explain the lack of people. Red wants everyone to know that the Gallery and Studios are still open during this period of transition and everyone that braves the monster trucks will be rewarded with smiles and enthusiasm.

Open House Artist Co-op Event

Friday mornings are generally quite busy at Red when the Toddler & Preschool Art Studio begins at 10am, however, Friday, September 5th changed all of that. At 10am, when our mommies and kids were arriving for their morning of art and socialization, demolition of the sidewalk in front of Red began. Only 4 mommies and their 5 kids braved the demolition crew with their monster sized equipment. When it was time to go home at Noon, it was discovered that the demolition crew had parked the backhoe up to the door and left for lunch. Everyone inside Red had to stay until the crew realized their mistake and moved the backhoe.

The drama of the demolition continued all afternoon as Red prepared for the Open House Artist Co-op Event that was to begin at 5pm. As the afternoon continued it became apparent that the demolition was having a grave effect on the evening's event. People began calling to see if the Event had been cancelled, with monster equipment parked in front of Red's door people could not even tell if Red was open for business. Out of desperation of not knowing who to complain to phone calls were placed to the three local television stations to see if anyone could help Red save the Event. One station provided the phone number of Bruce Floyd,the Construction Supervisor for the City of Yakima, and said he was awaiting our phone call. The call was placed and action was taken immediately to help Red. The demolition was seized and clean up was initiated. Mr. Floyd made arrangements for a plywood walkway to be constructed before 5pm. A foot path along the street was widened for safer passage along the street. Bruce Floyd is Red's hero.

Red's guests began arriving while clean up was still taking place. As the evening grew, more guests arrived. Many commented on the walkway and the timing of the demolition. One of Red's guests turned out to be Sade Malloy of KIMA-TV. Sade brought her camera and hung out with Red's guests and artists. Sade showed a real interest in what was happening at Red and how the demolition of the sidewalk was affecting the Event. Red is honored by Sade's presence during the Event and the sense of importance that she brought to Red.

Many of Red's guests got first glimpse of September's theme for art classes. The students are learning about the technique and style of Vincent Van Gough. They were given paper, black, blue, yellow, and white paint to create their interpretation of a night sky with movement and texture. If you did not get a chance to see these pieces at the First Friday Event, please stop by Red and take a look at them.

Fall Schedule

Now that school has begun for most in the Valley, Red has also gotten into the groove of things. Red is promoting a Homeschool Art Class every Wednesday, from 10am to Noon; After School Art Class every Wednesday and Thursday, from 3:30 pm to 5:30 pm; and the very popular Preschool and Toddler Art Studio is every Friday, from 10am to Noon.
Each month will have a new theme centered around specific artists. Today the kids explored Vincent Van Gough's painting technique of layering paint using the Starry Night as their model. The kids created skies containing movement and texture. Over the following three weeks, the exploration of Vincent Van Gough and his works will include his use of color and texture. The kids will create sunflowers and self portraits.
Now that the year is underway, check back here regularly to see what Red and the kids are up to.

Weekend Artist's Recap

The art show opening was great. Truly inspiring.

I was at the CAPE convention over the weekend teaching art workshops for 5 different age groups. High School and MIddle School students made tesselations on a 3-D box design, 3-5 grade students looked at prehistoric Hopi Indian Pottery Designs and used them to inspire original designs, while preschool through 2 grade made masks with cut paper, glue and whole lot of giggling. Those CAPE parents did a great job putting the convention together. What a big task. I was honored to be able to share my "wares" with many homeschool families in our valley. I have a lot to offer now and even more when summer arrives. I enjoyed sharing my ideas for summer projects and art camp and listening to the kids share their interests. If you are interested in summer day camp at the Red Gallery sign up soon---it will fill up fast. Registration is on a weekly basis and camp is Monday thru Thursday, 9:00-12:00. This way students can develop an art piece and explore art materials within a theme. There will be so many age appropriate activities available, both long term and short term, that a student registering for more than one week will still have a blast. June is puppet theater and animation month, July is science in art/art in science month, and August will be stories, myths, and legends. Stop by and check out what is going on right now! Everything from spray bottles to monster trucks to palette knives are being employed to apply paint to paper. We may just use a real fish! Take Care.

Art show opening this Friday

Wow!! Heritage University will open its spring student show this Friday with some passionate work by eight of its artists. The textures, layers of colors and complex imagery show real growth and courage. This show will be up for quite a long run due to Red's busy Spring and Summer schedule so if you miss the opening this Friday, May 2, you will still be able to view it until June 21. The opening corresponds with Yakima's new First Friday events and if you are up to it there will be so many things to do. Check out the schedule in the On Magazine this Friday.

Just a little note: Red's incredibly gifted artists and teachers will be at the CAPE convention this weekend teaching workshops and generating interest. The gallery will have to be closed on Saturday, May 3, unless a gifted, compassionate artist wants to come in and work for free.

Summer schedules for kids and registration is out this week. Sign up early so you can save a spot.
